In our work with shark fishermen, we have to make sure our presence is accepted, even by those not directly benefiting from it. By making contributions to the school of the island, not only do we improve education for future generations, but we show that our presence and the choice of tourism instead of fishing is one that benefits everyone.  The school has been asking us for a long time, to help with a bathroom.

So, we employed fishermen to build one, now the hundreds of school children, who used to leave class to go to the beach to do their business in the sand, have a bathroom of their own.  In addition, with the help of Artist Naomi Sharp joining us as a part of our collaboration with Murdoch University, we have painted the bathroom! The children joined in and added their hand prints to their new bathroom.

Why does a bathroom matter? Because now more than 150 students do not have to leave the school and travel to the beach where they will do their business before the bathrooms! Improving quality of life, education & providing basic needs.

The continuation of our relationship with the fishermen, relies heavily on how we are perceived in the eyes of the community. Shark conservation has only ever been a potential threat to their future, now we are showing that it could mean a better future.
